The 2011 BET Awards

The BET Awards is an annual award giving body established by the Black Entertainment Television network in 2001. It is meant to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in the entertainment industry like music, sports and acting.

Chris Brown won the awards for Best Male R&B Artist. His single, Look at Me Now featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes won the Viewer’s Choice Award, Best Collaboration Award as well as the Video of the Year Award. Meanwhile, his ex-girlfriend, Rihanna won Female R&B artist, however, she did not attend the awards show as she was currently on tour.

The best female hip hop artist award went to Nicki Minaj and the best male hip hop award went to Kanye West. Wiz Khalifa won the award for best new artist while Diddy-Dirty Money took home the award for best group. The young star award was awarded to the Smith siblings, Jaden and Willow. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Patti Labelle. Outstanding performances from artists such as Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Trey Songz and Mary J. Blige made the event even unforgettable.

There were a lot of bloopers as well, it was a good thing Rihanna skipped the event because she was the subject of an embarrassing situation when she was mistakenly named as the winner of Viewer’s Choice Award for her song What’s My Name, featuring Drake. Drake accepted the award for both of them but then later on it was announced that the winner was actually Chris Brown and NOT Drake or Rihanna.
